Beyond Barriers: Diverse Threads of Resilience
The Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon, 2025
Rachael Smith recently exhibited in Beyond Barriers: Diverse Threads of Resilience at The Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon, alongside artists Rachel Gadsden and Suzie Larke. Co-curated with the Beyond Barriers Art Collective, the exhibition brought together three distinct creative practices connected by shared themes of transformation, identity, and resilience.
The exhibition explored how creativity can provide a powerful means of navigating lived experience, particularly in relation to disability and neurodiversity. Through sculpture, painting, photography, and mixed media, the works reflected journeys of challenge, renewal, and self-discovery, inviting audiences to engage with art as a space of empathy, connection, and possibility.
Rachael’s contributions focused on her intuitive sculptural practice, using organic forms and textured surfaces to explore the fragility and strength of the human condition. Her work reflected her ongoing interest in transformation, sensory experience, and the ways in which art can communicate aspects of identity that are often unseen.
Beyond Barriers emerged from friendship, collaboration, and shared lived experience, celebrating the creative potential that arises when difference is embraced. The exhibition highlighted the role of art in building community, shifting perspectives, and creating meaningful connections between artists and audiences.
