“Landscape of the Mind”

Bay Arts Gallery 2019

When I began mediation at 17 years old, it created a safe place within myself in an otherwise ‘hostile’ environment, which enabled me to survive troubled events in my life.

Meditation often teaches understanding of the 7 chakras, the spinning vortex-like energy centres of the body. For thousands of years it has been believed to be where essence and balance of the mental and physical wellbeing belong. Each Chakra has it’s own associated colour and qualities of physical, emotional and spiritual states.

“Landscape of the Mind” series are constructed with paper pulp and acrylic paint; representing conscious thought drifting through varying states of chakra meditation. Paper acts as a common repository for thoughts and ideas. In my artwork such ideas and thoughts have been encrypted onto paper, pulped and recreated as a landscape. This is not picturesque but rather a process of thought form. The artwork then is neither representative nor a state of being, it resides in a liminal space between mediation and the conscious representations of the ‘real’ the passageway to enlightenment.

The video shows a higher state with a subtle fleeting thought drifting through, yet a consistency of higher consciousness sustained throughout
